HIGHS AND LOWS: (14 minutes)
Write down one high and one low from your week in your prayer journal and share them with the group. Pastor Breen or another student will gather them in prayer as we light our candles.
REVIEW: (2 minutes)
What sticks with you from last class? You may refer to your one sentence summary if you are stumped. What questions remain about how we get to heaven?
INTRODUCTION: (1 minute)
Last week, we talked about how to get to heaven. This week, we will conclude our study of the New Testament with what the Bible tells us that heaven is like.
WHAT IS HEAVEN LIKE?: (35 minutes)
What does Jesus have to say about heaven?
Read John 14:1-7. Underline verses 2-3 in your Bible. Write “I have a place in God’s house” in the margin. Jesus says that heaven is God’s house. He will go and prepare a place for each one of us, and then come and take us there, so we can be together forever.
What will we look like in heaven?
Read I Corinthians 15:50-57. Underline verses 52b (For…) to 53 in your Bible. Write “I will be a new body. It will be able to live forever!” in the margin. One of the facts of life is decay. Out cells begin to break down from the moment that we are born. We believe that we will have bodies, but without the aches, pains, and perishable nature of our current ones.
What will the end be like?
Read Revelation 21:1-7. Underline verse 3b (See…) in your Bible. Write “God will come home to us!” at the top of the page. Just like our bodies will become new, so will heaven and earth. God will come down and live with us, and we will be who we are called to be, without the problem of sin. What a bright future!
How does the Bible end?
Read Revelation 22:16-21. Underline verse 21, and circle the last word, “Amen.” Write “It is finished! Let it be so!” on the page near the verse. The Bible begins with “In the beginning…” and ends with “Amen!” which means “Let it be so.” Congratulations on making it to the end of the New Testament! Next year, we will study the Nativity Story, the Gospel of Mark, and the parables.
TAKING IT HOME (3 minutes)
- During this week, in your prayers, try using “God of Grace” as your title for God.
- Write a one sentence summary in your prayer journal. In this sentence, describe your answer to the question “What did you learn about in Confirmation class this week?” in as much detail as possible.
OUT LOUD PRAYER: (5 minutes)
Let It Be So Prayer
Think of your greatest hope or wish for your relationship with God over the summer and write it in your prayer journal. When everyone knows what they want to pray about, we will share them in a circle. In between each prayer, we will all respond, “Amen! Let it be so!”
Conclude your time together with the Lord’s Prayer.
