Lesson #13: Old Testament: Tower of Babel

Babel
Byron Water Tower by pbsipes

HIGHS AND LOWS:
Write down one high and one low from your week in your prayer journal.  Pastor Breen or a student volunteer will gather them in prayer.

REVIEW:  What do you remember from last class?  About Noah?  About humankind?  About the flood?  About the rainbow covenant?  You may refer to your one sentence summary from last week if you are drawing a blank.

GATHERING ACTIVITY:
Play a lightning round of Jenga.  Discuss how easy or hard it was to choose which brick to take.  Discuss what it was like to be safe or the one who knocked the tower down.

OUT LOUD PRAYER/LIGHTING THE CANDLE:
Use Heart Ignite’s “Babbling Brook Prayer,” found on page 78, to pray about as many people as possible.

DWELLING IN THE WORD:  Genesis 11:1-9
Read Genesis 11:1-9 from the New Revised Standard version of the Bible.  Underline things you have questions about.  Circle things you like or would like to discuss more.

Comprehension Questions:

  • At the beginning of the story, what did the whole world share (verse 1)?
  • Where did they settle (verse 2)?
  • What did they decide to make first (verse 3)?
  • What did they decide to make next (verse 4)? Why?
  • What did the Lord God do (verse 5)?
  • What did the Lord God have to say about this (verse 6)?
  • What does the Lord God decide to do (verse 7)?
  • What did the people do in response (verse 8)?
  • What was it called (verse 9)?
  • Why was it called this (verse 9)?

Content Questions: Answer the following questions as completely as possible (group activity:  do this with your parents):

What scares, confuses, or challenges me in this text?

What is my favorite part of this text?  Why?

What stories or memories does this text stir up in you?  You might remember a story about starting a project that broke down because of communication problems, or a time when you couldn’t understand someone because they were speaking a different language, for example.

What is God doing in this text?  What is God up to?

CONNECT BIBLE ACTIVITY:  Turn in your Connect Bible to page 19 and read that page as a class.  Then, complete the activity described in bold.  Share your work with the class (take a copy to show to Pastor Breen if you do this activity at home)

TALKING TO GOD/TAKING IT HOME:

  1. During this week, in your prayers, try using “God of all” as your title for God. Make a special effort to emphasize “Our Father” when you pray the Lord’s Prayer this week.
