OUTLOUD PRAYER/LIGHTING THE CANDLE: Survival Gear (5 minutes)
Today we will be learning about how God helped his people to survive, even when they were far from home. One of the service projects that our parish engages in is personal care kits for Lutheran World Relief. One of the places where these kits go to is refugee camps. A refugee camp is a place where people who have lost their homes to war or violence go for shelter. LWR currently has refugee projects in Kenya (for those fleeing Sudan and Somalia), in El Salvador (for unaccompanied minors), and is working on the emerging refugee crisis in Europe. Locate these places on the map provided and keep them in prayer this week.

THE BIBLE Miniseries: Survival (Daniel) (30 minutes)
Today, we will watch the portion of the Survival episode of The Bible miniseries from the History Channel that follows Daniel. Begin after the narrator says, “need a leader like Daniel,” and end when the narrator begins to speak after Daniel’s dream about the Roman Empire (there is a brief blackout). As you watch, consider the following devotional questions from the ELCA Book of Faith Initiative:
What scares, confuses, or challenges me in this episode?
What is my favorite part of this episode? Why?
What stories or memories does this episode stir up in you?
What is God doing in this episode? What is God up to?
TIME TO SHARE (10 minutes)
When the episode has concluded, take a few minutes to jot down some notes answering the above questions. You will share your answers with the group.
ONE SENTENCE SUMMARY (3 minutes)
In one sentence, describe what you learned during this lesson, as if you are sharing the answer “What happened in Confirmation this week?” with a friend. Write it down in your prayer journal.
